Bicycle Race

bicycle race

24" x 30" oil on canvas

Born out of the memories of my days as an amateur cyclist, this painting remembers the opening of the Gateway Cup at Lafayette Square in St. Louis. The race occurs Labor Day weekend and opens on Friday nights at Lafayette. The Pros and categories 1 & 2 race under the lights after dark.

This work features calculated sporadic brush strokes and intermittent color changes. These seemingly random changes in technique and color are reflective of the calculated risks and releases of energy that cyclists make throughout a race.

If you would like to see what a race at Lafayette Square looks like check out the galleries of Tosh Yoshino, my former coach, fellow photographer and friend.
